See Lapland from space

Located above the Arctic Circle, Lapland, which its Sami people also call Sápmi, extends

through northern Norway, Sweden and Finland, and to the Kola Peninsula in Russia. It is washed by the Norwegian Sea in the west, the Barents Sea in the north and the White Sea in the east.

Lapland in winter means snowfall, temperaturebelow zero degrees and northern lights. Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, is at the top of the image and is considered the official hometown of Santa Claus.

In Rovaniemi, the Arctic Circle passes through Santa Claus Village, located eight kilometers north of the city center.

New image from European SpaceAgency (ESA) combines three radar images from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission. The goal is to show changes in the state of the earth over time. The first image from February 28, 2019 is marked in green, the second from March 11 is marked in red, and the third, from April 4, shows the changes in blue.

Changes that have occurred over timein this image, mostly visible in the lower left corner of the image, where sea ice in the Gulf of Bothnia has shifted substantially along the coast. The Gulf of Bothnia, the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea, is located between the west coast of Finland and the east coast of Sweden. Because of its many rivers flowing into it, including the Torne and Kemijoki rivers, which are visible in the image, its salinity is very low and the ice cover persists for up to five months in winter.

There are many small islands here, which makes it difficultshipping in the bay. During the voyage, ships are assisted by icebreakers. Ships follow straight lines for easy navigation. These straight lines from the port of Reutta and the port of Agios are visible in the picture.

Copernicus Sentinel-1 isAn advanced radar mission that can image the Earth's surface through clouds and rain regardless of the time of day, making it an ideal mission for observing areas often shrouded in darkness—particularly the polar regions.
