A holographic drone control system appeared

Scientists from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have presented a new interface for controlling drones.

It uses holographic hardwareproviding augmented reality to create 3D terrain maps in real time. Focusing on them, drones can only indicate the target to which they need to fly. They will do the rest themselves.

Holographic interface works with headsetMicrosoft HoloLens. It generates augmented reality content in the form of a map that can be viewed from any angle. The system also conveys a sense of the height and depth to which the drone is oriented. HoloLens then sends commands to the drone, identifying its next target on a holographic map. The autonomous drone flies to the location, updating the 3D map as it travels.

The University of Hong Kong team needsmodify the control system of the unmanned aerial vehicle. Initially, drone data was transmitted using Wi-Fi within the test space, and cellular communications transmitted information with delays. The researchers also noted that so far the management model "works in a very limited space." In one of the cases, the drone late loaded the altitude data and crashed.

However, scientists are confident that the data from 3D maps will bemore effective navigators than first-person video. In addition, during long flights, the devices will need six times less data, while their quality will not change. In the future, the team wants to combine both streams to reduce traffic even more.
