Walking shoes introduced in VR

The Pittsburgh-based company showed off its first product, the Ekto One shoe. This is a pair of robotic devices,

which can be used in VR to simulate walking or running, while the user remains in place. The startup presented its development using the example of the game Half-Life.

The shoe uses a carbon fiber constructionfiber - it's lightweight and uses HTC's Vive Tracker to track motion in VR. On the bottom of the device are two rotating plates that can rotate in the direction the user is walking. As soon as they place their foot on the ground, a set of wheels pulls the foot backward, giving a walking sensation. Moreover, the shoe has its own braking system, which works when a person is standing still.

In the preliminary briefing at the beginningThis month, Ekto CEO Brad Factor assured that the system has passed rigorous safety tests. While the device has not appeared in the public domain, however, given the potential risks, the researchers plan to bring it to the market only after two iterations of product improvement.

Engineers note that while Ekto One is designedonly for corporate users - it is still too large, complex and expensive for consumer use at present. Ekto VR will be commercially available in two to four years.
