Quantum computers are expected to revolutionize the way complex computing problems are solved.
To overcome the limitations of modernquantum computers, researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are developing models that provide insight into how quantum computers work.
"When we try to directly observeBecause of the behavior of quantum systems such as qubits, their quantum states will collapse, explains PNNL computer scientist Ang Lee in a Brookhaven National Laboratory press release. “To get around this, we use simulations to study qubits and their interactions with their environment.”
Lee and his staffOak Ridge National Laboratory and Microsoft are using high-performance computing to develop simulators. They simulate real quantum devices to perform complex quantum circuits. They recently combined two different types of simulations to create the Northwest Quantum Simulator (NWQ-Sim) for testing quantum algorithms.
"Testing Quantum Algorithmson quantum devices it is slow and expensive. In addition, some algorithms are too advanced for modern quantum devices,” Li said. “Our quantum simulators will help us go beyond the limitations of existing devices and test algorithms for more complex systems.”
