The cost of the project for the production of six submarines will be $5.2 billion. The German concern Thyssenkrupp AG and the Indian company Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will take part in the tender.
India is in need of submarines,as the fleet of operating submarines is gradually becoming obsolete. The Indian Navy wants to have at least two dozen submarines in service to ensure effective patrols in the Indian Ocean. Now the service has 16 submarines, and 10 of them are over 30 years old.
Because of the war in Ukraine, India begins to look for newarms suppliers. At the same time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is urging local companies to increase arms supplies to India in order to reduce the Asian country's dependence on the Russian Federation.
