Problems of the American prototype of the ship's combat laser revealed

The publication "Military Review" spoke about the problems that arose during the tests of the American

prototype of a shipborne combat laser.

In general, the US now wants to increase powerlaser weapons without a significant increase in the volume of the power supply system. So far, the military is working mainly on creating ship-based laser systems.

One of the tests of a prototype of such an installationpassed about four months ago. Then the prototype was installed on the USS Portland transport dock (LPD-27). The laser was supposed to shoot down a simulated enemy drone. As a result, the device was able to hit only at low altitudes, while the time of exposure to the laser beam for the start of the drone's fire had to be at least 15 seconds.

However, as noted by journalists, noa professional pilot simply will not let the laser "focus" on the fighter for 15 seconds or more. In addition, the used 30 kW unit cannot work well at high altitudes and in low clouds.

Experts have concluded that to cause harmFor a fighter at an altitude of 8-9 kilometers, the laser must focus on the aircraft for more than a minute. And this is too high a value: the fighter will easily have time to leave the affected area.

Another problem is that, due to the laser installation, it is necessary to use additional security systems for the electrical equipment of the warship.
