The research will be based on data from the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima-1, where work on
Researchers from National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in collaborationwith specialists from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo City University will develop technologies and methods for determining the radiation and nuclear properties of corium, said Georgiy Tikhomirov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Technology (INP&T) of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.
Corium is a melt of core elements, formed during the development of severe accidents at nuclear power plants. Work under the joint grant will be carried out until December 2020, however, NRNU MEPhI and Japanese universities expect to continue cooperation in joint research.

Researchers have already begun work, in particularThey carried out an analytical review of scientific, technical and regulatory literature and conducted patent studies. They collected data on the composition and structure of corium and fuel fragments of the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, presented geometric models of melt particles and carried out detailed modeling of the corium.
This data will help improve the technique.determining the radiation characteristics of corium fragments and substantiating the nuclear and radiation safety of their placement in special containers for transportation and storage.
