Huawei representatives were stunned by the news: the company is curtailing production of proprietary Kirin chips.
Why
?
Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong said that the Mate 40 series flagships will be the last devices with Kirin processors. As of September 15, the chips will no longer be produced.
This is due to US sanctions, whichimply a ban on cooperation with Huawei without a special license. If previously the ban applied only to American manufacturers, it has recently extended to foreign companies that use American technologies, equipment, etc. in their work.
Among them was the Taiwanese company TaiwanSemiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which produces Kirin chips. Previously, it announced that it would stop accepting new orders, and is now completing already ordered processors until September. These are the same Kirin 1000 for the Huawei Mate 40 line. By the way, their announcement is expected on September 5 during the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) consumer electronics exhibition.
It is unknown what processors Huawei will now use, but most likely they will be MediaTek chips.
The head of the company also noted that now all Huawei products, including PCs, tablets and even smartphones, will be based on Harmony OS, and not Android. But he did not indicate specific deadlines.
