According to Bloomberg's source, by the end of the yearSony plans to assemble and ship 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles to stores. Initially, insiders spoke of 5–6 million copies that the company was going to release by March 2021.
PlayStation 5 mass production has begunin July, and Sony plans to prepare the first batch of 5 million devices by the end of March. It will be sent to retailers to launch the new generation this winter. The remaining 5 million will be collected by the end of December to be put on shelves by March 2021.
As the source notes, Sony has reconsideredexpected sales due to a possible extension of the quarantine, which will force people to stay at home. Therefore, the demand for game consoles, and PlayStation 5 in particular, may increase.
At the same time, the company is preparing for possiblelogistical problems, and wants to avoid the shortage of the console on store shelves that Nintendo has already faced. Most consoles are assembled in China, and due to the pandemic, delivery is now taking longer.
