Solar energy costs hit historic lows

In several countries around the world, solar energy has become the cheapest source of electricity in history.

This is largely due to policies to stimulate the growth of renewable energy. This is stated in a new report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The study covered more than 130 countries around the world, who are pursuing a policy to reduce the cost of building new solar installations. This is the first such analysis that the IEA has taken into account government policies when calculating the cost of solar energy in its annual World Energy Outlook report. According to their calculations, the cost of solar energy, compared to last year, fell by 20-50% in each region.

Experts who participated in the compilationof the report, believe that solar energy will soon become the "new king of energy supply." Oil prices are expected to continue to fall over the next decade and solar energy will become more affordable due to global efforts to combat climate change. The EU, for example, has set a goal to get 32% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

“It looks like green energy has politicalsupport, and we see it in many countries around the world, - said Brent Wanner, he leads the modeling and analysis of power generation at the IEA. "These measures are really needed to keep costs low, which are at the heart of solar growth."

The report also notes that mostcountries of the world, building solar farms is cheaper than building new coal or gas power plants. For solar projects completed this year, the average cost of generating electricity over the plant's lifetime was $ 35 to $ 55 per megawatt hour. Four years ago, the global average cost of solar energy was $ 100 per megawatt hour.
