Archaeologists in Italy have discovered a cemetery that dates back 1,600 years. They found the remains of babies there,
An analysis of the graves showed that many of the dead suffered from malaria during their lifetime. Perhaps the outbreak of the disease influenced the fact that people buried children in this way.
The cemetery is located in the ruins of a Roman villa onarchaeological site of Poggio Gramignano in central Italy. It dates from the 5th century AD. At that time, the Western Roman Empire had already collapsed and many of the people had converted to Christianity. However, the fear of the undead was common among them, and was observed among representatives of other faiths of that period.
Excavations at the site began in the 1980s andcontinue to this day. But only now it was possible to find an explanation for the unusual finds. Since then, archaeologists have discovered a large number of remains, including puppies. In ancient times, dogs were buried with people to protect the dead from evil spirits. The puppies, in turn, protected the children.
