Smart acoustic fabric collects cosmic dust on the ISS

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an acoustic fabric that

sensitive to vibrations that it candetect impacts of microscopic cosmic particles with high speed and accuracy. On Earth, these fabrics will be useful for detecting explosions and in the future will act as sensitive microphones for the directional detection of gunshots.

The tissue system contains thermally stretchedvibration-sensitive fibers capable of converting mechanical vibration energy into electrical energy. When micrometeoroids or space debris hit the fabric, it vibrates and the acoustic fiber generates an electrical signal.

The acoustic fiber is designed withinprojects aimed at creating a new generation of fibers and fabrics for soldiers' uniforms and military equipment that can determine various physiological parameters. For example, heart rate and breathing, as well as external sounds - gunshots and explosions.

“Traditional telescopes use light tostudying distant objects; this fabric uses cosmic dust analysis to learn about space, ”explains Yoel Fink, Ph.D., professor of materials science and electrical engineering at MIT. "It turned out that our development can solve problems that go far beyond what we originally envisioned."

In the future, scientists plan to use the fabric to create a new generation of spacesuits. Intelligent fabrics can help astronauts sense touch through sealed suits.

The 10cm by 10cm fabric is now being tested at the International Space Station, where it has been mounted on an outer wall and exposed to the harsh conditions of space.
