Mental disorders develop in 20% of patients after coronavirus

Many patients who have recovered from coronavirus are at greater risk of developing mental disorders.

This was stated by researchers from OxfordUniversity - according to them, about 20% of those infected with coronavirus within 90 days have a high chance of developing one or more types of mental disorders.

Anxiety, depression, and insomnia were the mostcommon among patients who have recovered from coronavirus. Researchers at the University of Oxford also found a significantly higher risk of dementia and brain disease. They call on scientists from around the world to research this addiction in order to take steps to reduce the incidence of mental disorders.

In a study published in the journal TheLancet Psychiatry, analyzed electronic medical records of 69 million people in the United States, among them there were 62 thousand patients who had had coronavirus. The percentage of mental disorders among the latter was higher, and they developed within three months after recovery.

New blood test finds deadly superbugs in less than an hour

Within three months of a positive testfor coronavirus, one in five subjects found the first signs of anxiety, depression or insomnia. This was about twice as likely as in other patient groups over the same period.

Mental health professionals who are notthose taking part in the study said these results may indicate that the coronavirus can affect the human brain, increasing the risk of developing multiple mental illnesses.

“This is likely due to the combination of stress from the pandemic and the physical effects of the disease,” said Michael Bloomfield, a consulting psychiatrist at University College London.
