No Case Needed: Apple Patents iPhone Back Panel That's Resistant to Dents and Scratches

Apple and other smartphone makers have long been experimenting with materials for their phones.

cases to make them more comfortable and durable. And a new Apple patent suggests the company has found an unusual new way to make the iPhone "indestructible."

What does it mean

So Apple just got a new USPTO patentcalled "Spatial Composites," which describes a special coating for the back of a smartphone. It consists of a large number of microgranules, which can be made of different materials: glass, ceramics, and metal. As a result, such bubbles make the panel more resistant to scratches and dents.

Помимо этого, покрытие играет не только защитную роль, но также выступает элементом дизайна. В патенте говорится, что шарики способны отражать свет и «мерцать, как полированные драгоценные камни».

В патенте описывается, что этот процесс is intended for mobile devices such as smartphones, watches, tablets, laptops, portable computers, music playback devices and more. But, in any case, for now it is just a patent, which may remain only on paper.
