What to do if macOS Big Sur update "breaks" your MacBook Pro

Last week we wrote that the macOS Big Sur update “broke” some late 2013 MacBook Pro models

and mid-2014. Apple has already acknowledged the problem and told what to do if it breaks.

Instruction manual

  • Press and hold the power button on your Mac for at least 10 seconds, then release. If your Mac is on, it will shut down.
  • Disconnect all external devices from your Mac, including monitors and USB accessories. Also remove any cards inserted in the SDXC card slot. Then turn on your Mac.
  • If the problem persists, reset the SMC as described for notebook computers with non-removable batteries.
  • If problem persists, reset NVRAM or PRAM

If all of the above points do not help, the manufacturer advises contacting the company’s service center. Apple also plans to update the instructions as new information becomes available.
