Last November, the European Parliament approved a new policy for mandatory labeling of gadgets

indicating the assessment of their maintainability. But so far the corresponding requirement has come into force only in France. As a result, Apple had to show all its cards, albeit only in one country.

What does it mean

Ratings have been published on the official Apple websitemaintainability of smartphones and laptops. In many ways, this is reminiscent of the iFixit resource assessment: the gadget is given a score from 0 to 10, taking into account ease of disassembly, availability of parts and the presence of a repair manual.

For example, iPhone 12 has 6 points, iPhone 11 and 11Pro - 4.6 points, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XR - 4.5, and iPhone XS and XS Max - 4.7 and 4.6, respectively. The iPhone 7 was recognized as the most repairable with 6.7 points, followed by the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (6.6 points each), as well as the second generation iPhone iPhone SE (6.2 points).

As for laptops, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with M1 processors are rated at 5.6 and 6.5 points, while the 16-inch MacBook Pro has 6.3 points.

Most likely, such requirements will begin to apply in other EU countries.
