Researchers from Japan have set a new data transfer speed record – 1.02 petabits per second (Pbps)
Even NASA will get “only” 400Gbps when ESnet6 rolls out in 2023. At 1 Pbps, it is theoretically possible to broadcast 10 million channels in 8K resolution, the team claims.
A new record was set by researchers fromJapanese National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) using new technologies: the optical fiber contains four cores – glass tubes through which signals are transmitted, – instead of the usual one. Bandwidth is expanded to a record 20 THz using a technology known as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).
This band consists of 801 wave channels,distributed over three ranges. Using some other new optical amplification and signal modulation technologies, the team achieved a record speed of 1.02 Pbps, transferring data over 51.7 km of fiber optic cables.
