117 plants are threatened with extinction due to melting glaciers

Besides the ski slopes, some of the most iconic symbols of the Alps are the alpine flowers. These plants

used in medicines and form the basis of local food chains. But a recent study conducted inFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, shows that while plant diversity may initially increase with glacial retreat, many of these species may soon become threatened with extinction.

A new study finds that diversityplants will eventually decline after the glaciers disappear. About 22% of the species analyzed by scientists may disappear after the melting of glaciers. Lead author Gianalberto Losapio, from Stanford University in the US, said that "not all species are equal in the face of global warming."

“Some types of climate change benefit, while others will suffer,” the scientist explains.

As glaciers retreat, open upnew available land for plant growth. The problem is that this changes the habitability and diversity of ecosystems.  According to the study, a total of 117 plant species will be affected.
