Of course, the point is not so much thatthe invention revolutionized the electric vehicle industry—magnetless motors already existed before Sansone's invention—so much so that his work, at such a young age, serves as an inspiration to engineers around the world.
Synchronous reluctance motors are usuallyare used for pumps and fans and are not used in electric vehicles. However, Sansone's new model improves torque and does not require magnets, which are made using expensive and often unethically mined rare earth metals. The use of these materials also means that the global electric vehicle industry is heavily dependent on China, which is the world's largest exporter of rare earth metals.
Within a year, Sansone created a prototypea new type of synchronous reluctance motor using 3D printed plastic, copper wires and a steel rotor. He tested it with a laser tachometer to determine the torque, and the results of his experiments eventually won him the top prize at ISEF.
