Previously, scientists made electrolytes from ceramic materials: they conduct ions with high quality, but they do not withstand loads during the charge-discharge cycle.
The authors of the new work decided to use cellulose nanofibers from wood: they made polymer tubes from wood and added copper to it to create a solid ionic conductor.
As a result, the researchers managed to createelectrolyte with a conductivity similar to that of ceramics and even 10-100 times higher than that of other polymer ionic conductors. The authors believe that they managed to achieve this result thanks to copper: it creates space between the polymer chains of cellulose to form "ionic superhighways". As a result, charged lithium particles move with record efficiency.
