A bug in watchOS 7 and iOS 14 "broke" Apple watches and smartphones: what to do about it

After updating iPhone smartphones and Apple Watch smart watches to iOS 14 and watchOS 7, the owners of these devices experienced problems

What's wrong

Apple acknowledged a bug in the updates and reported that in some cases users encounter the following problems:

  • The Health and Fitness apps crash: they report the wrong amount of data and do not launch or download data to the iPhone
  • There is no exercise route map for GPS-enabled exercises on Apple Watch in the Fitness app on iPhone
  • The watch does not run apps for activity, heart rate, or other health-related apps
  • The Health app on iPhone doesn't have ambient sound level data or headphone level data on Apple Watch

In addition, users complain about increased battery consumption on Apple Watch and iPhone.

What to do

If you're experiencing these issues, Apple advisesFirst of all, unlink the watch from your smartphone. If this does not help, you will have to reset both gadgets to factory settings. But before that, you need to disconnect your Apple Watch and back up your iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. After the reset, restore from your backup.
