Scientists have created a map of the entire brain of a fruit fly larva that shows 548,000 synapses. They
The map took 12 years to create. The connectome (a complete description of the structure of connections in the nervous system of an organism) shows the location of all 3,016 neurons in the brain of the fruit fly larva (Drosophila melanogaster). Between these brain cells are 548,000 connection points, or synapses.
Researchers have identified networks through whichneurons on one side of the brain send data to the other. They also classified 93 different types of neurons, which differ in shape, intended function, and how they connect to others.
In 2020, another research group published a partial connectome of an adult fruit fly that contained 25,000 neurons and 20 million synapses.
