A method for increasing the accuracy of X-rays has been developed

To generate X-rays in conventional X-ray tubes, electrons accelerated by high

voltage, collide with a metal anode. The atoms in the metal deflect and slow down the electrons in their path, or the electrons excite the metal atoms, after which they emit radiation.

Both electron deceleration and excitationmetal atoms lead to X-rays. However, it is directed in different directions, so it is difficult to direct it into a focused beam. In addition, the wavefront is completely chaotic and disordered.

Physicists from the Institute of X-ray PhysicsThe University of Göttingen is now observing a new effect when the anode is replaced with a suitable structure of thin layers of materials with different electron densities.

Its thickness should be a few millionths of a millimeter. If a specific sequence of layers is selected, the X-rays can be directed.

When accelerated electrons enter thissandwich structure, the angular spectrum of the generated X-rays changes. X-rays are predominantly generated and directed parallel to the layers, which act as a waveguide similar to an optical fiber.

According to our calculations, adds Washolz, the effect can be further enhanced by optimizing the structure. This would allow the generation of x-rays with higher brightness.
