A monster black hole was found in the Earth’s “backyard”: it is very close to our planet

Scientists have discovered a so-called monster black hole, its mass is approximately 12 times that of the sun. She

is closer to the Sun than any other known black hole—just 1,550 light years away. “It’s practically in our backyard,” explain the study’s authors.

Black holes are considered exotic objects. The fact is that their gravitational force, although “felt” by stars and other objects in the vicinity, light cannot leave them. Therefore, they cannot be observed in the same way as visible stars. In some cases, such as when a supermassive black hole is located at the center of a galaxy, it controls its formation and evolution.

It is not yet clear how these non-interactingblack holes influence galactic dynamics in the Milky Way. If there are many of them, they may well influence the formation of our galaxy and its internal dynamics.

To find the black hole, scientists analyzeddata on almost 200,000 double stars. Data about them was received in the summer by the Gaia satellite of the European Space Agency. They paid close attention to a star 1,550 light years from Earth.

Scientists used spectroscopic measurementsand analyzed the radial velocities of the visible partner star of the candidate black hole. So they deduced how massive it is, as well as its rotation period and the eccentricity of its orbit. Spectroscopic measurements independently confirmed Gaia's observations. The telescope revealed that this binary system consists of a visible star orbiting a very massive object.

According to scientists, there are aboutmillions of visible stars that have massive black holes. The problem is that there are a hundred billion stars in the Milky Way. “It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. The Gaia mission, with its incredibly precise measurements, made the task easier by narrowing the search,” the scientists conclude.
