A new type of diagnosis finds bacteria that cause poisoning or pneumonia

New Imaging Tool Uses Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for Non-Invasive Search

and tracking dangerous infections.

He can detect:

  • microbial family of the family Enterobacterales,
  • a group of microbes, including strains of Escherichia coli: they cause food poisoning,
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae causing pneumonia
  • Yersinia pestis or plague stick.

The new instrument combines PET technology withsorbitol is a molecule used in the manufacture of sugar-free foods. This molecule was used because other microorganisms, cancer cells and human cells do not absorb it.

The authors tested their new imaging method. In total, the scientists performed 71 PET scans on 31 patients, 18 of whom had previously been found to have enterobacterial infections.

The results showed that PET imaging was capable of detecting and localizing Enterobacterales infections in multiple body sites.

The researchers believe their method could play an important role in optimizing antibiotic treatment and preventing the growth of dangerous strains.
