A normal cough masked a serious illness. The patient had no other symptoms

A seemingly healthy man developed a cough that persisted for three weeks. Any

He had no other symptoms. It turned out that the cough appeared due to a 17.2 cm long formation that rested on the patient’s right lung.

As the authors of the article noted, the 22-year-old man did notsmoked in the past and had no history of severe illness. At the emergency room, he was tested for COVID-19 and it was negative. However, a chest X-ray revealed fluid accumulation between the layers of tissue that cover the right lung and lined the chest cavity. It filled the small airways of the lower right lung, preventing them from filling with air.

The medical team then performed a computertomography (CT) and discovered a large formation that was hidden in the right half of the patient’s chest. It was located in the mediastinum. This is the space between the lungs that contains the heart, lymph nodes, nerves, and other structures of the chest. Doctors took a sample of the formation and discovered that it developed from cells of the thymus gland. It is located just behind the sternum and is responsible for the production of mature immune cells.

Doctors then performed surgery to removeneoplasms and further analyzed its tissues. The tumor was not malignant. However, it is believed that all thymomas, that is, tumors of the thymus gland, can become like this, so when detecting formations, doctors take this risk into account.

The patient spent another week in the hospital aftersurgery, and at a follow-up appointment one month after discharge he did not experience any symptoms. He will have another check-up six months after surgery. He will have a CT scan and radiation therapy to reduce the risk of the tumor growing again.
