Though sacred, it is one of the most polluted waterways in the country.Now, the part of the river that runs through central Delhi is covered in white foam that resembles snow. 

The city government blamed the pollution on factories that dumped industrial waste upstream last week.However, that didn't stop several Hindu devotees from taking a dip in the river to celebrate ChhathPuja, a four-day festival of offering prayers to the Sun.

According to local authorities, the pollution has already disrupted the water supply to part of the city, but the exact number of households has not been specified.

“I would like to thank the affected residents fortheir cooperation, Raghav Chadha, deputy chairman of the city's water supply department, said in a statement Sunday. “Our team of officers and engineers is working day and night to keep water problems for the people of Delhi to a minimum.”

Indian officials have long pledged to clear the Yamuna. A 2020 government report says the river's water quality has "critically deteriorated" over the past five years.
