“We think of the atmosphere as a separate layer onthe surface of the planet, which interacts minimally with the planet itself, said scientist Stephen Cain, author of an article in Nature Astronomy. “The study of the strong atmosphere of Venus shows us that this is its more integrated part, which affects all processes, even the speed of the planet’s rotation.”
Venus takes 243 Earth days to completeone turn. However, the planet's atmosphere rotates it every four days. This is due to fast winds that force the atmosphere to move along the surface of the planet, thereby slowing down its rotation and weakening the influence of solar gravity on the cosmic body.
The slow rotation of Venus is the reasonhigh temperatures on the planet. One reason for the heat is that nearly all of the Sun's energy is absorbed by its atmosphere. This means that a solar-powered device similar to the one NASA sent to Mars will not work on the planet.
The study is being conducted to explore not onlyVenus, but also exoplanets. Most of the planets that scientists will observe with the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope are very close to their stars, even closer than Venus is to the Sun. Consequently, these planets will also be blocked by the gravitations of larger planets.
"Because people may never be able toto visit exoplanets, it is important to ensure that computer models account for the effects of gravitational lockdown. The study of Venus is our opportunity to correct these models so that we can correctly understand what surrounds the surfaces of planets around other stars," Kane said.
