A secret passage hid Australia's deepest cave

Cavers from the Australian caving organization Southern Tasmanian Caverneers walked through the cave with depth

401 meters. It is located in Tasmania, on an island south of the Australian mainland. Stephen Fordyce, who first discovered it and organized the expedition, named the cave "Delta Variant" after the COVID-19 strain. The goal is to remind future cavers about the history of coronavirus.

The team spent 14 hours underground, movingthrough an underground system that included a 163-meter-high waterfall. “Exploring the cave was very intense,” said caver Ben Armstrong, who was involved in the study, in a press release. “It’s almost vertical, we had to climb up and down hundreds of meters using ropes.”

The bottom of the Delta Variant cave connects with previouslyexplored Niggly-Growling Swallet cave system. However, a hidden passage discovered by cavers has made the “delta cave” the deepest in Australia. However, the deepest known cave in the world is still the Veryovkin Cave in Abkhazia. Its depth is 2,212 m.

Cave Delta Variant belongs to the type of karst. From a research point of view, karst caves are incredibly valuable, as they contain cave deposits - stalagmites and stalactites. They have annual layers that can be analyzed. It helps to learn more about the past of our planet.
