The Canadian city of St. Marys, in Ontario, was attacked by a ransomware virus that blocked access
Small town with a population of about 7500of residents appears to have been targeted by the well-known ransomware group LockBit. On July 22, a message appeared on their website that townofstmarys.com was the victim of ransomware, and files were shown that were stolen and encrypted.
During the conversation, St Mary's Mayor Al Strathdee told The Verge that the city is responding to the attack with a team of experts.
"To be honest, we are in a statesome shock", – said Strathdee. “It's not very pleasant to feel like a target, but the experts we hired have identified what the threat is and are telling us how to respond. The police are interested and have allocated resources to this case… There are people here who are working on this around the clock."
In the screenshots posted on the LockBit website,The file structure of the Windows operating system is shown, containing directories corresponding to municipal systems such as finance, health and safety, wastewater treatment, property affairs, and public works. The city has been given a deadline by which it must pay to unlock its systems or the data will be released online.
