A solar storm will hit Earth towards the end of the week

A stream of high-speed solar wind is expected to hit Earth on December 1 or 2, reports

 Spaceweather.com. The reason is the opening of a “canyon-like” coronal hole. The star is currently in the active phase of the 11-year solar cycle.

Coronal holes are areasin the upper layers of the Sun's atmosphere, where the star's plasma is less hot and dense than in other regions. This makes them appear black. Around these holes, the solar magnetic field lines do not loop, so stellar material is thrown “out” at speeds of up to 2.9 million km/h.

A barrage of energetic solar “garbage”mainly consisting of electrons, protons and alpha particles, it is absorbed by the Earth's magnetic field, which is compressed, causing a geomagnetic storm. The storm that could make landfall on Thursday is likely to be fairly weak. This is predicted to be a G-1 geomagnetic storm that will cause minor fluctuations in power grids and disrupt satellite functions, including mobile devices and GPS systems.
