Plastic packaging and containers are suitable forfood preservation, but they create a huge amount of waste that can end up in the environment, so the researchers decided to create an alternative.
The team stated that the material can be easilyproduced on a large scale using a process called air jet spinning. It can then be extracted and applied to any food, particularly vegetables, fruits and meat.
In tests, the team found that the coating could extend the shelf life of avocados by 50%. If the spray gets into the environment, it quickly decomposes in 3 days.
This is not the first time scientists have developedenvironmentally friendly food-grade coatings to replace plastics. Other teams have experimented with films made from shrimp shells or spider silk, as well as packaging made from milk proteins or edible pectin coatings.
