A very reactive substance found in the atmosphere for the first time: it affects our health

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and their colleagues recorded the formation as follows:

called trioxides, are highly oxidizing chemicals that are likely to affect human health and the climate.

Hydrogen peroxide is a well-known chemicalcompound. All peroxides have two oxygen atoms attached to each other. This makes them highly reactive, as well as flammable and explosive. Peroxides are used for everything from whitening teeth to cleaning wounds and even as rocket fuel. But peroxides are also found in the atmosphere.

In recent years, there have been suggestions thatIn the atmosphere, there are also trioxides, chemical compounds with three oxygen atoms attached to each other. Therefore, they are even more reactive than peroxides. But so far this has not been unequivocally proven.

“The type of compounds we found is uniqueby its structure. And because it is super-reactive, it is likely to cause many effects that we have yet to discover,” Henrik Grum Kjærgaard, professor at the University of Copenhagen. 

Hydrotrioxides (ROOOH) are completelya new class of chemical compounds. Researchers have shown that these compounds are formed under atmospheric conditions. They also found that hydrotrioxides are formed when several popular types of emissions decompose in the atmosphere, including isoprene and dimethyl sulfide.

Hydrotrioxides are formed as a result of the reactionbetween two types of radicals. The researchers hypothesized that almost all chemical compounds would form hydrotrioxides in the atmosphere. Their lifespan ranges from minutes to several hours. Therefore, they are stable enough to react with many other atmospheric compounds.

The research team also believes that trioxides can enter aerosols, which pose health risks and can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
