A very strange shark was first photographed while walking on fins

On a distant ledge at dusk off the coast of Papua New Guinea on May 3, 2022, scientists collided with something

Using its fins for locomotion, the miniature black-and-brown speckled fish swam across a tidal puddle that barely had enough water, moving like a clumsy sea lion, dragging its body along the shore.

This creature turned out to be an epaulette shark(Hemiscyllium ocellatum) and is unique among other species in its ability to walk on land. Forrest Galante, a conservationist and biologist, recently shared rare footage of this unusual species in a special episode of Discovery Channel's Shark Week.

"This is the first time in history that one of the Papuan species has been filmed walking," Galante said in the release." It's incredible."

Scientists believe that epaulette sharks, a speciesfound all over the southern coast of New Guinea and the northern coast of Australia developed the ability to walk because it helped them to forage in conditions where other sharks could not survive.
