We are talking about the reconnaissance satellite "Cosmos-2551",which is the head unit of the newest series of small-sized optical reconnaissance satellites "Razbeg". It was launched on September 9 on a light rocket Soyuz-2.1v, the launch was carried out from the Plesetsk cosmodrome.
The cause of the incident is not known for certain, butit is assumed that "Kosmos-2551" did not send any fixed radio signals and, apparently, has not functioned since the moment it entered orbit. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense stated that all onboard systems of the satellite are functioning normally.
All information mainly came from American and Canadian sources. The fall of the satellite was recorded on many video cameras in these countries.
The unit was reportedly at a loworbit and needed constant position adjustments, but, according to Western sources, they were not made. This led to the fact that the satellite gradually descended and subsequently burned up in the dense layers of the atmosphere. Since the satellite has completely burned down, its fall does not threaten the locals.
