Video of fire on Mount Kilimanjaro posted online

The fire started on Friday evening near Karanga. This place on the south side of Mount Kilimanjaro is often

used by climbers who climb the famous peak. It is located at an altitude of about 4,000 meters. Tanzanian authorities have now brought the fire under control.

“In general, the situation is under control. We believe that over time the problem will be completely resolved,” Agence France-Presse quotes the official statement of the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism Pindi Chan.

Also, local official Nurdin Babu told reporters that “everything is under control” and the department “has largely managed to control the fire.”

As a result of a fire on the territory of the touristcenter and UNESCO World Heritage Site in northeastern Tanzania, no one was killed. Tens of thousands of climbers flock there every year to conquer the snow-capped peak.

Authorities mobilized hundreds of firefighters, national park staff and civilian volunteers to fight the fire. The problem was exacerbated by strong winds that fanned the flames at the summit.

Footage published on social networks shows huge flames consuming vegetation and bushes, leaving gray smoke.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.but officials said it's possible climbers or honey collectors could have started it "inadvertently." At the same time, Herman Batiho, a representative of the Tanzania National Parks Authority, emphasized that he is “confident” that poachers are to blame.

The fire occurred two years after another fire raged for a week in October 2020. Its area was 95 km².
