Bizarre volcanic comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann (29P) erupted as it passed Solnechnaya
The flying comet is about 60 km wideand orbits the Sun in approximately 14.9 years. 29P is considered the most volcanically active comet in the Solar System. It is one of about 100 comets called "centaurs," according to NASA. They were pushed out of the Kuiper belt into a closer orbit around the Sun between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune.
The Kuiper belt is the region of the solar system from the orbit of Neptune to a distance of about 55 AU. e. from the Sun. Although the Kuiper belt is similar to the asteroid belt, it is about 20 times wider.
On the evening of November 22nd, amateur astronomer PatrickWiggins noticed that 29P's brightness increased sharply, Spaceweather.com reported. The next day, Andre Debacker used the Faulks Northern Telescope in Hawaii to photograph the expanding shell of debris. Subsequent observations by other experts showed that this burst of brightness was the result of a massive volcanic eruption on the comet. It is the second largest observed at 29P in the last 12 years. The largest eruption during this time was the eruption in September 2021, Hi-Tech wrote about this earlier.
The volcano comet is erupting more actively than in the past 40 years and has become 250 times brighter
An eruption of this size is considered quite rare. According to the British Astronomical Association, the explosion was followed by two small flares on November 27 and 29.
