Why should abortion continue to be studied and discussed?

At the end of September, Russia approved a new plan for the implementation of demographic policy: the government planned to increase the proportion of women who refused to have an abortion.

A document has been published on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers, according toto which the proportion of women who underwent pre-abortion counseling in order to keep a child should grow to 80% of the total number of women who have applied to medical institutions for an abortion. Half of them are supposed to decide to keep the child. The government is also going to promote traditional values.

China, in turn, decided to reduce the number of abortions for medical reasons. This is due to the fact that during the pandemic of a new type of coronavirus, the birth rate has fallen.

Is it safe to have an abortion?

In short, yes. The WHO considers abortion a safe procedure if it is performed by “suitably qualified personnel using WHO-recommended methods.”

As a result, the share of abortions was higher indeveloping than in the developed regions of the world. It is estimated that more than half of all unsafe abortions in the world took place in Asia, mainly in South and Central Asia.

How long can you have an abortion?

In Russia, artificial termination of pregnancy byIf a woman wishes, it can be done up to 12 weeks after the start of fetal formation. This number of weeks can be counted from the date of the last menstrual period.

What are the types of abortions and which one is the safest?

WHO refers to safe abortion methods:

  • vacuum aspiration (during the procedure, a tube is inserted into the uterine cavity and the contents are sucked out).

WHO recommends these two methods for early termination of pregnancy.

If a woman chooses a medical abortion, then sheYou need to take two tablets under the supervision of a doctor: the break between taking the drug is a day. This method is suitable if a woman is at most in the ninth week of pregnancy. Medical abortion may fail in 2–5% of all procedures. If this happens, the woman is sent for a surgical abortion.

But vacuum aspiration can be carried out for a periodup to 12 weeks. Before this, the woman is checked for risk factors, if any, then after the procedure the patient should spend some time in the hospital. The procedure is successful in 99% of cases.

Less safe abortion methods:

  • curettage or scraping, the method is considered obsolete even if the personnel have the appropriate qualifications,
  • abortion using caustic substances or by introducing a foreign object (all these methods are classified as dangerous, like the recipes of traditional medicine).

In Russia, the most common wayThe method of dilatation and curettage (up to 80%) still remains, but the situation is improving: in 2018, medical abortions accounted for 34%.

Unfortunately, unsafe abortion methods are notare in the past. According to the WHO, from 2010 to 2014, almost half of the procedures for termination of pregnancy were carried out with non-compliance with safety requirements. As a result, the annual cost of treating serious complications from unsafe abortion is $ 553 million.

Can abortion lead to cancer?

No, it's not connected in any way. Usually this refers to breast cancer, but previously scientists conducted a study and confirmed that the procedure does not lead to the appearance of a tumor.

How are abortion and infertility related?

Modern science claims that the connection betweenthese two events are extremely small if the abortion procedure is carried out safely. Despite this, the result is greatly influenced by the method of abortion, as well as the number of weeks from the start of fetal formation.

There is a risk of developing infertility if there were surgical interventions involving the cervix during the procedure. Complications after surgery can also lead to infertility.

How often are complications after an abortion?

  • Medical abortion

There are several side effects in this case −nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and loss of coordination, this occurs in approximately 33% of cases. Serious complications, such as bleeding, occur much more often. In this case, 0.06% of women required hospitalization. One woman in 200 thousand dies from the consequences of complications.

  • Vacuum aspiration

This method of termination of pregnancy can causebleeding, rupture, or perforation of the cervix. But the hospitalization rate is also extremely low - 0.5% of cases. There is also a risk that inflammation will begin - this happens in 5–20% of cases, and usually if the person does not take antibiotics for prophylaxis after the procedure. In the event that a woman receives appropriate medication, similar consequences can begin only in 0.5% of cases.

Termination of pregnancy is psychologicallya difficult procedure, but the physical health of a woman, subject to all requirements, remains normal. Today, abortion in most developed countries is a safe and affordable procedure, the risks of which fluctuate at the level of error. If it is banned at the legislative level, it will lead to an increase in the number of unsafe abortions and deaths.
