Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41 review: replacing the gaming desktop in 2021

</ img>

Acer has expanded the Nitro 5 line to very impressive proportions. And just about everyone looking for a gaming laptop...

will be able to find something suitable.Today's hero Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41 is quite suitable as a desktop replacement. It has a combination of a powerful AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor and a GeForce RTX 3000 graphics card, so there are no problems with performance in modern games. The laptop is equipped with a high-quality IPS screen with a refresh rate of 144 Hz. And the 17.3-inch diagonal is more comfortable for gaming, even if it makes the laptop more bulky. The cooling system does its job well, so even under prolonged loads the laptop does not experience problems with overheating. Perhaps the only thing I would like to add to all this is a more interesting audio system. As for the competitors and how interesting the price is, it’s difficult to say yet. This configuration is simply not on sale. But the junior model with AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD and nVidia GeForce GTX 1650 is now selling for 30,000 UAH.

5 reasons to buy Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41:

 • very high productivity;
 • fast and high-quality display;
 • fast drives, 2xM.2 and space for a 2.5-inch drive;
 • efficient cooling system;
 • full-size keyboard with customizable backlighting.

2 reasons not to buy Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41:

 • built-in speakers of mediocre quality and power;
 • you need a more portable model.

What is included?

Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41 packed in standarda mustard-colored cardboard box with the name of the model, images of some kind of combat robots and a carrying handle. Inside there is a laptop, a power supply unit with two detachable power cables (with plugs for different sockets), an adapter and a set of fasteners for installing an additional drive.

</ p>

How does it look and qualitatively assembled?

</ img>

Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41, like the entire line, is mademade of black plastic. The coating seems matte, but still collects fingerprints a little. The laptop looks quite discreet, like for a gaming model. The only reminders of positioning are the chopped outlines and the red decorative insert on the rear end. Above it is the inscription Nitro in red. All this looks good and does not cause rejection, like some people who are too “eye-rolling” gaming laptops.

</ img>

Now let's move on to the ends of the laptop.On the left is a Kensington lock slot, air vents, sliding Ethernet (RJ-45), a pair of full-size USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 and a headset combo jack.

</ img>

On the right side - HDMI, full-size USB Type-A3.2 Gen 2 with support for off-state charging, USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2 and another area with ventilation holes. The port selection is decent, but DisplayPort and a card reader would be great.

</ img>

They decided to take out a socket for connecting a power supply to the rear end. On the sides there are a couple of zones for blowing hot air out.

</ img>

Nothing interesting in front.There are no cutouts to pry on the display unit. Although not necessary: the wedge-shaped case is made in such a way that the laptop opens without any problems.

</ img>

On the bottom cover of the laptop there are a lot of holes for cold air intake, massive rectangular legs for stability, and triangular designations of the hot zones of the laptop, traditional for Acer gaming.

</ img>

The bezels around the screen on gaming laptops are usuallycannot be called minimal. The Nitro 5 has thin side gaps. Above and below, it is noticeably wider. Above the screen is a camera with microphones and rubber inserts. Below the screen is the Acer logo, and below, on the main unit, there are LED indicators.

</ img>

There were no questions regarding the assembly of the laptop, everythingthe details fit perfectly. But plastic is plastic and the lids bend a little, which is not surprising. Although in order to “push” work surface, you need to do this purposefully. There were no questions during the work. The laptop is not particularly mobile, like absolutely all 17-inch models. Its dimensions are 403.5x280x24.9 mm, so it won’t fit in every backpack. Weight is 2.7 kg, which is noticeable compared to ultrabooks, but very good for a 17-inch gaming model. Typically, 15-inch gaming models weigh this much.

</ p>

How convenient is it to use?

Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-41) opens without problemswith one hand, maximum angle is about 145°. The screen is fixed well in the desired position, but it wobbles slightly if you grab it with your hand. Although with such a diagonal this is expected.

</ img>

The 17-inch Acer Nitro 5 uses the samelayout as in the 15-inch model. It is full-size, with a separate number pad. Enter is one-story, the left Shift is long, the right one is slightly shortened due to the up arrow. The arrow block is not separated from the rest of the keys in any way, but is visually highlighted by an additional white border. The arrows are used to adjust the display brightness and audio volume via Fn. The top functional row is slightly reduced in height and ends with a power button. Between Backspace and Num Lock there is a button to launch the Acer NitroSense proprietary utility. The WASD block also has an additional white border. The layout is perfect for gaming. Typing takes a little getting used to.

</ img>

Button size and button spacingstandard, the stroke is 1.6 mm. Quite enough for comfortable use. There is RGB lighting, which is divided into four zones. Configurable using Acer NitroSense. It's not very bright, but just right for evening use. Everything is visible, but not blind:

</ img>

The touchpad is medium in size, the buttons are not separated.Sensitivity and size are sufficient for everyday use. It is possible to quickly turn it off (F2 is combined with the corresponding button) during games to avoid accidental clicks. Although, based on personal experience, this is not at all necessary.

</ img>

How good is the display?

Acer Nitro 5 is equipped with a 17.3-inch IPS display.There are configurations with FullHD and QHD resolution, and the refresh rate can be 144, 165 or 360 Hz. In our case, a FullHD matrix with a frequency of 144 Hz and a pixel response time of 3 ms is installed. Visually the screen is very good, both in colors and viewing angles. There is more than enough brightness reserve indoors. Playing on a fast screen is, of course, much more enjoyable than on a standard 60 Hz screen. Especially in shooters and action games.

</ img>

The measurements showed very good brightness values andscreen contrast. The maximum brightness was: 291.585 cd/m², black field brightness was 0.288 cd/m², and the contrast was 1018:1. The color gamut is almost the same as sRGB, but there is an excess of blue, as a result of which the picture goes a little into cool shades. For a gaming model this is quite forgivable.

What about performance, autonomy and sound?

The new Acer Nitro 5 is available in huge quantitiesconfigurations, both on Intel and AMD processors, and NVIDIA GeForce is used as video cards, starting with GeForce 1650 and ending with RTX 3080. A “charged” configuration on an AMD processor. To be precise, the laptop has a very powerful AMD Ryzen 7 5800H. This is a mobile processor from the AMD Cezanne line based on Zen 3 architecture and is produced using the 7 nm FinFET process. It includes 8 cores and supports 16 threads. The base clock frequency is 3.2 GHz, and the maximum clock speed is 4.4 GHz. L3 cache - 16 MB, TDP level - 45 W (35-54 W). Integrated graphics: 8-core AMD Radeon @ 2000 MHz. The amount of RAM is 16 GB DDR4 with a frequency of 3200 MHz, operates in dual-channel mode. The maximum supported is 32 GB. Our configuration uses NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, Laptop version, as discrete graphics. Roughly speaking, in terms of performance it is between the desktop and Max-Q versions. It is equipped with 8GB of GDDDR6 memory. The base frequency of the chip is 780 MHz and boost up to 1290 MHz. Wireless modules: WiFi 802.11 ax and Bluetooth 5.1, as well as RJ-45 and a Killer Ethernet E2600 gigabit controller.

As expected, the laptop demonstrates high performance in synthetic tests. This applies to both the graphics subsystem and the processor:

The laptop has two slots for M.2 PCIe SSDs. In our configuration, two absolutely identical Western Digital PC SN530 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe v1.4 SSDs, 512 GB each, were installed. It is also worth recalling that there is also room for a 2.5-inch hard drive or SSD.

They demonstrate high operating speed. Reading – up to 2850 MB/s, writing – up to 1840 MB/s, with declared 2400/1750 MB/s:

The Acer system is responsible for cooling the internalsCoolBoost with two fans. Hot air is blown out both from the back and sides of the laptop. But the holes are placed in such a way that the flow of hot air does not reach the hand with the mouse. Unfortunately, AIDA64 did not make friends with the laptop's sensors and in the stress test only the drive temperature was displayed. But Acer's proprietary NitroSense utility showed that during the entire test the processor temperature did not exceed 91° (with the official maximum of 105°), and the graphics accelerator temperature did not exceed 69°. The system does not throttle even under prolonged maximum loads. At the same time, only the area above the keyboard becomes warm. The keyboard itself remains cold. The CO is noticeably noisy under high load, although this is a standard situation for all gaming laptops. And it’s worth saying that the Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-41) is far from the noisiest gaming laptop that we’ve visited in our editorial office.

All tested games were launched with the maximumpossible graphics settings (including Ray Tracing where applicable). And, it should be said, the results are very impressive. Metro Exodus shows a range of 70 to 90 frames per second. Gears 5 - 105-125 fps. The long-suffering Cyberpunk 2077 with the settings turned to the limit shows a frame rate in the range of 35-45 fps, and Control - about 35 fps.

For the sound in the laptop, stereo speakers are responsible for 2Watt with Dolby Audio certification. They did not demonstrate anything special: a typical laptop solution, which is enough for watching movies or videos on YouTube. For music, their quality will not be enough, but during the game it is worth using headphones.

DTS utilities are provided to adjust the sound.

The application is used to configure the laptopAcer NitroSense. It has the ability to monitor the system, select the performance level, the operating mode of the cooling system, adjust the keyboard backlight, disable the Win button, and more.

The laptop is powered by a 4-cell batteryat 59 Wh. The manufacturer promises up to 9 hours of battery life. In real conditions, in “office” Using low brightness and using a browser, the laptop survives for about 5 hours. Which is actually very good for a gaming model.

In the dry residue. Three things to know about the Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41:
