Instead, they can be upgraded usingthe latest sensors and processors: they connect to the internal chip of the device like LEGO bricks. Such reconfigurable software can quickly upgrade gadgets and help reduce electronics waste.
The team created a design that hasalternating layers of sensitive and processing elements, as well as light emitting diodes (LED) - the latter allow the layers of the chip to transmit light. Typical modular IC designs use conventional wiring to carry signals between layers. Such complex connections are difficult and almost impossible to break or rewire. Therefore, they cannot be reconfigured.
The design of the MIT team used light,to transmit information on the chip. Therefore, it can be reconfigured: swap layers or overlap each other. So you can add new sensors or an updated processor.
