The US military continues to experiment with artificial intelligence technologies. How
The use of this technology will lead tomajor changes in strategy in military and government operations. Powered by machine learning, GIDE is able to detect even the slightest changes in data that indicate potential problems in real time. For example, if satellite images record a submarine of a hostile country preparing to depart from a port, the AI algorithm will note this fact, suggesting that the boat will most likely leave its mooring area. It would take military analysts hours or even days to review all the information and note these changes. In turn, the GIDE system copes with this task in a few seconds.
General Glen Van Herk, commander of the NorthernUS Command, said GIDE combines artificial intelligence and cloud computing resources with data from sources around the world to “achieve information superiority” and “decision superiority.” The use of an AI system will expand the Pentagon's military capabilities. For example, instead of being reactive and relying on outdated data, militaries can take proactive steps. This will be especially useful during military operations. It is noted that the system based on artificial intelligence will also be useful in civil operations.
While the US Air Force and Army also useAI for predicting conflict scenarios, the US Department of Defense's AI system uses data already collected from satellites, radars, human intelligence and other sources.
Founded in 1958 at the height of the Cold War, NORTHCOM is responsible for protecting North America primarily from air attacks and providing maritime warnings.
