AI piloted a military aircraft for the first time

The US Air Force conducted a flight in which an AI acted as a co-pilot on a U-2 spy plane. In the military department

stated that this is the first time that the modelmanaged the military system independently. The AI initially flew more than a million training flights, but the Air Force notes that this is a leap for “technological development in the military field.”

The model is called ARTUµ - this is the leadinga computer program that dominates chess, Go, and even video games without knowing the rules in advance. Despite the lack of scripts, the model was also able to control the aircraft and make final decisions in difficult situations.

AI carried out a reconnaissance operation duringimitation of a missile attack on the Biel Air Force Base. The AI searched for enemy launchers and tracked enemy planes. As noted by the researchers, the success rate of the model reached 80%.

Military engineers commented that ARTUµ was helpfulduring a specific simulation mission and helped the pilots maintain an advantage in decision-making on the battlefield. The Air Force noted that this will help the fighters not think about certain parts of the operation, but concentrate on their direct duties.

“Interaction with proven AI in all aspectsconflict and even temporarily making it responsible can change the odds in our favor. Given the high stakes in global AI, superiority over science fiction should become our military norm, ”the military noted.
