Air quality requirements have been raised in Russia

Representatives of the organization note that for the first time in several years they have reduced the permissible values for ten

pollutants, half of themcarcinogens that cause cancer: nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, acetaldehyde, dimethylbenzene-1,2-dicarbonate, carbon disulfide, benzene, beryllium and its compounds, 1,3 butadiene, acrylonitrile, carbon tetrachloride.

Now there should be less carcinogenic substances in the ambient air:

  • benzene - 1.7 times, acrylonitrile - six times,
  • carbon tetrachloride - 17.5 times,
  • 1,3-butadiene - 50 times,
  • beryllium and its compounds should not be in the atmospheric air at all.

These standards are close to Greenpeace’s calculations forbased on the “Guidelines for assessing the risk to public health from exposure to chemical substances that pollute the environment” adopted in Russia and the opinion of the World Health Organization.

Also, for pollutants other thanmaximum one-time and average daily, average annual MPCs have been introduced. These indicators are used in many countries, since it is better to assess the harmful effects of carcinogens taking into account their long-term exposure, Greenpeace said.
