The printer is called Metal3D, it can work withmetals that melt at temperatures up to 1,200 °C. For the first time, a 3D printer will be used to print useful structures from scrap metal on the ISS. It is still unknown where there is so much scrap metal on the ISS and how it will be collected.
For astronauts, the printer will (theoretically) print, for example, radiation shields and various tools.
Airbus called Metal3D the first step on the waydevelopment of a full-fledged space factory. The company published several videos in which it showed the theoretical operation of a robotic arm designed for assembling satellites.
The robotic arms will be able to build each other in orbit, but they can also be used to repair and refuel spacecraft, the company's engineers say.
