Aircraft A380 completes first vegetable oil flight

Samolet took a three-hour flight from Blagnac Airport in Toulouse. He was flying on an eco-friendly

aviation fuel (SAF), which is predominantly composed of used edible oil and fats. The device is powered by a Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine.Airbus then made a second flight using the same fuel, on thisflight from Toulouse to Nice.Second flightwas aimed at monitoring the use of SAF during take-off and landing.

The fuel was supplied by TotalEnergies. It is made from hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA), which do not contain sulfur.

Over the past year, Airbus has beenSAF flight tests, with the A350 aircraft tested in March 2021, and the A319neo flying on vegetable oil in October. The company hopes to have the aircraft certified for SAF operations by the end of the 2020s. For now, most aircraft can run on 50% SAF mixed with traditional kerosene.

“Increased use of SAF remains keyby achieving the industry's ambitious goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050,” Airbus said in a statement. The company claims that flying aircraft on SAF can deliver the 53% to 71% carbon reduction needed to achieve this goal.

Airbus plans to bring the world's first zero-emission aircraft to market by 2035.
