AMD graphics in Samsung processors in two years

American chipmaker AMD and Korean technology giant Samsung announced their cooperation in terms of

work on creating new mobile graphicsgeneration a month ago. Let us recall in what format the cooperation will take place is still unknown, but the Korean company, under the terms of the partnership, gets access to some technologies and intellectual property of the American company related to the development and production of graphics processors. Recently, additional information appeared on the terms of this international agreement.

What is known

Recently, a Korean company is clean to the topasked about some plans for the production of mobile graphics based on AMD solutions and its intellectual property. For a while, Samsung has been developing its own solutions in the form of Mongoose processor cores, which are designed for Exynos processors. But in the graphics segment, the company is still forced to use ARM-based graphics for the Mali accelerator. But in a year and a half or two years this situation will change, in any case, representatives of the Korean manufacturer say so. At the same time, both companies benefit from cooperation, Koreans receive patents and technologies for their own mobile graphics (most likely, not the weakest, since AMD's desktop solutions are at a very high level), and the American company itself may gain some niche in the mobile market, which failed to achieve the company Intel.

Answering questions from media representatives, an employeeThe company said that the new partner is and has always been one of the leaders among the chip makers of the world, and for many years has been competing in the graphic solutions segment with the strongest NVIDIA player. Thanks to this partnership, Samsung will be able to use all the achievements and competitiveness of the American company, firstly, to bring the characteristics of mobile graphics to a higher level, as well as improve work in other areas.

If we talk about the start time for the introduction of newtechnologies in real devices, then this procedure is standard. Testing time for any IT technology is about a year and a half. Consequently, in products, technology will begin to appear in a year and a half or two. The microarchitecture to be used in mobile graphics is called AMD RDNA, and it is the next generation after the GCN architecture. The latter was introduced seven years ago, the new architecture, in addition to greater performance, offers energy efficiency that exceeds its predecessor by half. If the partnership is successful, then Samsung will be able to have a huge impact on the segment of gaming smartphones and tablets, and, possibly, two-in-one hybrid devices. Razer, Asus, as well as Black Shark will have to seriously make room.
