Americans 95% cleaned their wastewater from drugs

The results of a study by scientists from the University at Buffalo in the USA were published online, in which

they were able to detect a noticeable decrease in the levelantidepressants and antibiotics in wastewater. According to researchers, this effect is associated with the beginning of the use of the most advanced water purification methods, which made it possible to remove more than 95% of chemicals.

In total, experts studied sevenwastewater treatment plants, after which they came to the conclusion that the water currently contains record low levels of drugs. To achieve similar results, two advanced treatment methods were used in regions with clean water - carbon filters and ozonation.

”Our studies complement the findings of colleagues,which demonstrate that ozonation and the use of activated carbon can be very effective in removing persistent pharmaceuticals from wastewater, ”said one of the study's authors, Ann McElroy.
