An office tower completely covered with solar panels will provide itself with energy

The eight-storey Skala building will be built in West Melbourne, Australia. It will be the first office building in the country

a tower entirely covered in solar panels, which will be a game-changer for the construction industry.

The $40 million tower will feature 1,182 panels as thick as a typical glass façade. The Skala solar panel system is currently manufactured by the German company Avancis.

When construction is completed, the array of panelswill provide sufficient power to meet virtually all of a building's energy needs without ongoing energy costs. The building will also become carbon neutral within a few years, serving as a prime example of the promise of decarbonization in the construction industry.

Thin Film Photovoltaic Building Modulewill transfer the generated electricity to the tower's main power source. According to The Guardian, it can generate 50 times more energy than a typical rooftop solar PV array used in residential buildings.

Once completed, the system will provideenough power to meet the energy needs of the entire building, preventing the emission of 77 tons of CO₂ per year. With the addition of additional roof panels, the building is planned to consume virtually no electricity and become carbon neutral within a few years.
