Scientists believe a volcano is erupting deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. Possibly in the Commonwealth
On Monday, the US Geological Survey reported,that the Ahi seamount began to erupt in mid-October. It is located approximately 6,115 km west of Honolulu. According to Matt Haney, a research geophysicist at the agency, scientists are trying to figure out if this is due to an earthquake in shallow water or if rock is blasting out of a crater. Scientists are now checking satellite data to see if there is discolored water in the region, he said. It may indicate that an underwater volcano has become active.
The activity of an underwater volcanic vent was recorded last month thanks to hydroacoustic sensors at a distance of about 2,250 km on Wake Island.
Possible source of seismic activityrecorded using the Geophysical Laboratory in Tahiti and data from seismic stations in Guam and Japan. The US Geological Survey said in a statement that the activity of the possible volcano has been declining in recent days.
The Ahi Seamount is a largeconical underwater volcano. Its highest point is 79 m below the ocean surface. It is located about 18 km southeast of Farallon de Pajaros, also known as Uracas.
“There are no local stations near the Ahi Seamountmonitoring, which makes it difficult to detect and characterize volcanic activity there, the agency said. “We will continue to closely monitor available remote hydrophone, seismic and satellite data.”
The seamount is part of the Marianavolcanic arc, which is a chain of more than 60 active volcanoes that extends over 900 km to the west and parallel to the Mariana Trench.
