An unusual fusion reactor with inexpensive fuel and lasers is being tested in China

The thermonuclear reaction requires isotopes of hydrogen, which are abundant in the environment. But so far scientists have not

managed to create conditions for the fusion of hydrogen atoms, because this requires a huge amount of energy in a very small space. 

Previously, American scientists proposed usingFor this purpose, lasers are aimed at one point. They used 200 high-power lasers that focused on a pellet of deuterium and tritium fuel. According to the results, the energy output was 70% of the total amount spent on the lasers. 

The same approach was used by Chinese scientists.They took a laser that was less powerful and also used fuel assemblies that looked like small cones. The sharp ends of the assemblies were directed towards each other, so the hydrogen plasma clouds after contact were directed towards each other. The result was a fusion reaction.

Chinese researchers working at the Shenguang II thermonuclear reactor have managed to conduct three successful experiments since the summer of 2020.

The developers note that their design is much cheaper than the one proposed by the Americans.
